Eric Carle’s books seem simple only at first glance. In the small board book about a very hungry caterpillar that eats various things over the course of a week and turns into a butterfly at the end, a child simultaneously learns colors, the names of fruits, numbers, and the days of the week. The child also learns something about the importance of healthy eating (only on Saturday does the caterpillar indulge in chocolate cake and sausage; before and after that it feeds exclusively on fruit and greens), as well as the fact that every caterpillar inevitably turns into a butterfly. This also means that the child, too, will one day certainly grow from a caterpillar into someone else!
